How the Pronghorn Came Back

Pronghorn fell to about 13,000 animals by 1915. Today about one million roam the West.

The low point

Unregulated hunting, fencing and farming cut pronghorn numbers by about 99 percent in the late 1800s.

The recovery

Closed seasons, state laws and new refuges in the Great Basin let herds rebuild. Numbers topped one million by 1984, and regulated hunting returned across the West.
